Spelling

Early spelling, in Reception and Year 1, is taught using the Little Wandle phonics programme, where children develop their knowledge of phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (written letters). When the children are ready, usually in Year 2, the children move onto the Little Wandle Spelling. This builds on children’s knowledge of the alphabetic code and teaches them how to spell with confidence.  Beyond Year 2 we use The No Nonsense Spelling Programme. The focus of the programme is on the teaching of spelling, which embraces knowledge of spelling conventions – patterns and rules; but integral to the teaching is the opportunity to promote the learning of spellings, including statutory words, common exceptions and personal spellings.
